I recently finished (watching) an InDesign tutorial on YouTube that I've been meaning to get around to for some time now. I have prior experience with some ANCIENT page layout software, like... the company has been out of business for such a long time that their replacements are out of business too, and was delighted to learn that in spite of decades, REMARKABLY LITTLE HAS CHANGED IN PUBLISHING SOFTWARE.

*tiny fanfare*

Of course I still have to do all the work of laying out the pages for my book, but that will be easier since most of the content is done. I can certainly borrow layout concepts from published RPGs... I certainly have a lot of them on my shelf for quick comparison.

Then there's the getting around to actually doing it, but I'm pretty motivated.

I'm putting together a preliminary playtest packet (holy alliteration, Batman!) so I can figure out layout before proceeding to the next step.

My wife pointed out that I had basically written the meat of the game, and was getting mired in rewrites that won't be important until I'm much, much closer to publication -- which is still a good deal of playtesting and fundraising away from now.

So I narrowed down the list of races and classes to *just* what will appear in the first book.

Honestly, as much as I want to put everything together in a single, massive compendium -- I just don't have the resources to do that. I'm going to have to work in stages or nothing will ever get done. Blah, blah, blah. Yawn. Boring business stuff, boring productivity stuff.

I'm not even really sure what to be the most excited about right now. So many things are changing that I'm just trying to stay on top of things.

Crazy! Exciting! And a little scary!

I've nearly finished the second round of character classes drafts. My gaming group will be trying these out this week. Druids, Warlocks, and Exorcists were in the most recent update (Monday).

Once these are done, I'll need to finish roughs of player races which are mostly-but-not-quite done. Fortunately the combat component of race, while substantial, is intermittent. That probably makes no sense. Let me put it another way, when combat takes a turn for the worse, your character's race is what determines your ace-in-the-hole type power.

While remarkable, racial powers have a longer "cool down" period than your standard array of powers. Which means you're sure to use them, but not as often. Hopefully enough that everyone looks at you and says, "That's a fine-looking [insert racial archetype] you have there." But not so much that it overshadows your character's class -- which is where the bulk of your combat options come from.

I mean in the end, are people going to remember that you were an elf or a necromancer?

Both are important -- but come on! Necromancer! Raising the dead! Kind of important!

I swear I was here the other day, and deviant art changed its look AGAIN.

I've been a deviant for over TEN YEARS and this site has never had a good look.

It just gets busier, and stupid-looking, and busier, and more cluttered.

SIGH.

What about being able to find stuff, huh?

Guess how long it took for me to find "post journal" THIS TIME.

Go on, GUESS. SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH.

Deviant art ate my last journal entry.

So this one is short and sweet.

My RPG -- which has spent eight years in development -- is going into testing.

This isn't like the testing I did in 2008 or the testing I did in 2009. It's the same game but I took a great deal of time learning from my mistakes. I also took the time to develop the world for the rules -- which was the focus of my first (and now my second) webcomic.

It's weird to think about this project nearing completion.

Like, actual completion and not just wishing-really-hard nearing completion.

Not that I don't like comments, it's just that most of the ones I have aren't relevant, or somehow don't reflect my page anymore. You're welcome to leave comments. :p
